Archdiocese of Glasgow, Scotland

History

St Peter’s is one of the best of Glasgow’s wonderful collection of buildings designed by the architect Peter Paul Pugin (1851-1904).  Peter Paul’s father was Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, an important and highly influential cultural figure who changed the face of the architectural landscape in England with his championing of the Gothic Revival.  St. Peter’s is the largest of the churches designed by Peter Paul Pugin for the Archdiocese of Glasgow.   Its cathedral-like interior houses important original artifacts and fittings along with a superb collection of historic and contemporary stained glass.  The beautiful examples of stained glass include windows designed by Sr Callista of Notre Dame and modern memorial windows by one of our parishioners, Claire Mulholland.  The church furnishings include a beautiful stone reredos and alter table, designed by Pugin.  St. Peter’s is also well known for the high quality of its music, centred on the organ which was installed in 1913.
